About Me

My photo
About three years ago, I stopped buying new clothes. Too many clothing manufacturers use sweatshops or some other form of slave labor, and I refuse to support that. So I buy clothes second-hand and recycle old and thrifted clothes into new styles. I don't wear new clothes; rather, I am a new wearer of clothes.

Tablecloth --> Poncho

This is my first creation that wasn't an article of clothing already. I got this beautiful lace tablecloth at a yard sale for a couple dollars.

And turned it into a poncho, which I'm now obsessed with.

Dress --> Skirt

I found this rather ill-fitting frock at a garage sale for one dollar. I couldn't pass it up because I loved the color and the embroidery.

Not my most creative endeavor, but hey, I got a new skirt out of the deal!

T-shirt --> Halter Dress

I found this t-shirt at Goodwill (my boutique of choice) and absolutely loved the color and the graphic, but as usual, it was humongous.

So I turned it into a halter dress!! This is probably the creation of which I am most proud.

Two T-shirts, Two Restyles

So I have this habit of acquiring thrift store t-shirts that are awesome but way too big for me.
Exhibit A:

I wanted to keep the t-shirt look with this one, so I just took in the sides and redid the sleeves, and voila! I wear this all the time.

Exhibit B:

This one I wanted to have a little more fun with. I had no idea what I would end up with when I started working on it, but I absolutely adore the way it turned out!

Men's Shirt --> Dress

This is a shirt that I sort of appropriated from my dad several years ago. I don't even remember why I took it, 'cause I never wore it. For obvious reasons.

I cut off the sleeves, took in the sides, and added another button at the bottom, and it became a dress!

Sweatshirt Makeover

This is a sweatshirt that I bought at Walmart when my then-boyfriend-now-fiancé and I dressed up as twins for Halloween. Long story. haha

And this is what it became after it served its purpose as a costume.

Pants --> Skirt

I've had these pants since I was a tomboy in high school. I wore them all the time back then, but they haven't been in style (or at least, in MY style) since about 2006. haha.

Since I always need skirts to wear to work, I decided to attempt a pants-to-skirt project.

I think it turned out pretty well once I figured out how to make the back work.

Men's Shirt --> Skirt

This project was when I started taking "before" pictures. This was a men's shirt that I got at Goodwill a few years ago simply because I liked the color. I think I wore it as a shirt maybe twice.

So I turned it into a skirt!

I kept the shirt's original curved hem.

Skirt --> Dress

This is when I started getting more creative. One of my good friends gave me a long, full, kind of hideous green skirt because she didn't want it anymore. I didn't really want it either, but I took it anyway because hey, free clothes! I'm glad I did, because I eventually came up with the idea of turning it into a dress!

The fullness that made the skirt so awful is partly what makes the dress so wonderful. =)

First T-shirt Restyle

My dad bought me this t-shirt that was too big, so I never wore it. Shortly after discovering the magic of recycling clothes, I decided to experiment by making it into a tank top. This is the result; I think it turned out pretty good considering I had no idea what I was doing!

I was especially proud of the shoulder detailing.

My First Recycled Clothing Creation

In 2011, I made this skirt out of oversized t-shirts (that I got for free when I donated blood) and an old pair of jeans that I hated. I also sort of made the tank top, but that's not as impressive because I just cut off the sleeves. lol

Also, this is the weirdest picture ever....

It was kind of a strange skirt, but I loved it! More importantly, it got me hooked on this idea of recycling clothes - turning something old into something new.
